Word Problems with Addition — Drawing the Picture (Little Newtons Class 6, Grade 1) — 25 Practice Questions with Hidden Answers
A grade 1 classroom-ready lesson on solving addition word problems by drawing a picture first. Includes theory on the four picture types (circles, cubes, tally marks, part-part-whole bar), the words that signal addition, and how to write an equation from the drawing. This is Class 6 of the SOMATH Little Newtons arc for grade 1. In Classes 1–5 we built number sense to 20, place value, the make-ten strategy, doubles/near-doubles, and subtraction within 20. Class 6 is where those number facts finally meet real-world thinking: a story is read aloud, and the child has to figure out what math to do.
The single most important habit we teach in Little Newtons: before writing any numbers, draw a picture. The picture makes the math visible. Once the picture is drawn, the equation practically writes itself.
Every question below has a hidden button that reveals the answer and the picture the child should have drawn, so a parent can practice together and then check the thinking. Written by the same team that teaches Little Newtons at SOMATH, a math-focused school on the Upper West Side of NYC run by cofounder Marcelo Ambrozio (Northwestern) and cofounder Vivianne Wright (Harvard).
- Warm-up: quick addition facts within 10, then within 20 (5 min).
- Teach the four picture types on the board with one example each (10 min).
- Model the 4-step routine (read → draw → count → write the equation) with two problems (10 min).
- Students work through the 25 questions with the answers hidden (15 min).
- Reveal answers together, ask students to explain their picture (10 min).
What’s in this lesson
1. What is an addition word problem?
Two groups → one total
An addition word problem is a short story where you have two groups (sometimes three) and you have to find the total. Nothing is being taken away. Nothing is being shared. You are putting things together.
Examples of the story shape:
- Anna has 4 stickers. Ben gives her 3 more stickers. How many stickers in all?
- There are 6 red apples and 2 green apples on the table. How many apples altogether?
- Sam saw 5 birds in the morning and 4 birds in the afternoon. How many birds did he see total?
Every one of these has the same math underneath: group 1 + group 2 = total. In grade 1 both groups are usually below 10, and the total stays within 20.
2. The 4-step routine: read, draw, count, write
The habit we teach every day
Every Little Newtons word-problem lesson uses the same four steps — forever. It becomes automatic by grade 2.
- Read the problem out loud, slowly. If your child reads it silently, they miss half of it. First graders read best with their mouth.
- Draw the picture. One shape for each thing. Two groups → two clusters of shapes.
- Count all the shapes together. Point with your finger. Say the count out loud.
- Write the equation with the label. 4 apples + 3 apples = 7 apples.
The label matters. “7” is a number. “7 apples” is a math answer. Grade 1 is where we teach that answers have units.
3. The four picture types
Pick the picture that fits the problem
Four pictures cover almost every grade 1 addition word problem. Let your child pick the one they like best — they’ll settle on a favorite. Only push a different picture when the problem needs it (see below).
A) Circles (or dots) — the default
Draw one circle for each item. Put a small gap between the two groups so it’s clear where one ends and the other begins.
B) Cubes or blocks — when the child has manipulatives
Same as circles, but the child physically stacks unifix cubes or LEGO bricks in two colors. Perfect for very early grade 1, when drawing is still slow.
C) Tally marks — best for numbers above 10
One line for each item. Group every 5 with a diagonal slash. Tally marks are faster than circles once the numbers get past 10.
D) Part – Part – Whole bar — when the two groups are related
The bar model (also called a “tape diagram”) shows the two groups as parts of one whole rectangle. It’s the picture that carries through to grade 2, 3, and 4 math — the earlier your child sees it, the smoother the years ahead.
4. Words that signal addition
The vocabulary of “put together”
Grade 1 word problems tend to use one of these phrases. If you hear them, addition is very likely the operation.

Warning: signal words are a hint, not a rule. A first grader can still misread “in all” if the picture doesn’t match. Always confirm by asking: “Are we putting things together, or taking some away?”
5. Part – Part – Whole thinking
The idea behind every addition problem
Every addition word problem in grade 1 has the same underlying shape:
part + part = wholeThe two “parts” are the two given numbers. The “whole” is what you’re solving for. When your child gets stuck, ask three questions in order:
- “What are the two parts?” (label them out loud)
- “Are we putting them together?” (yes → addition)
- “What’s the whole?” (draw the picture, count)
This vocabulary — part, part, whole — shows up in every Common Core grade 1 textbook and stays with the child through grade 3 fractions. Introduce it early.
6. Common grade 1 mistakes (and how to fix them)
Six mistakes teachers see over and over
- Adding the numbers in the problem without reading it. Grade 1 students see “3” and “5” in the sentence and just add. Fix: always ask them to read the whole problem back to you before touching a pencil.
- Drawing the wrong number of circles. Off-by-one is the most common counting error. Fix: have the child touch each circle as they count.
- Forgetting the label. Answer of “8” instead of “8 apples.” Fix: write the label first in the equation.
- Ignoring extra information. Some problems include a number that isn’t part of the math (a distractor). Fix: circle only the numbers you need for the picture.
- Confusing “more” with “more than.” “3 more” means add 3. “3 more than 5” also means add 3. Both add.
- Guessing from signal words alone. The picture is the check. If a child can’t draw the story, they don’t understand it — regardless of what signal word appeared.

“How many now?” means the total after getting more. Add.

This is a doubles-plus-one fact from Class 4: 5 + 6 is the same as 5 + 5 + 1 = 11.

Adding to 10 is easy: 10 + 4 = 14. Say it as “ten and four.”

This crosses over 10, but tally marks make it visible. Add ones to ones: 11 + 4 = 15.

The 2 pencils are a distractor — they aren’t money. Circle only the dollar numbers.

Three groups. Add them in order. Look for a pair that makes 10: 5 + 4 + 3 = 5 + (4 + 3) = 5 + 7 = 12. Or (5 + 3) + 4 = 8 + 4 = 12.

This is the very first “equal groups” problem — a preview of multiplication. But grade 1 solves it by adding: 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
