Frequently asked questions

The most common questions parents ask us. Call (646) 668-6151 or book a free evaluation for anything not covered here.

Is the SOMATH evaluation really free?

Yes. The 30-minute in-person evaluation and the written diagnostic report are free, with no obligation to enroll. We designed it this way because most families need real information about where their child stands before they can decide on a program.

What happens during the evaluation?

A SOMATH teacher meets your child for 30 minutes at our Upper West Side classroom at 226 W 79th Street. The teacher administers a written diagnostic across arithmetic, algebra readiness, geometry, and (for older students) reasoning problems. Then a brief conversation with you about goals, timeline, and any concerns.

What do I receive after the evaluation?

Within 48 hours we send a written diagnostic report that identifies exactly where your child stands, what the specific gaps are, and which SOMATH track (or which program elsewhere) would address them. The report is yours to keep whether you enroll or not.

How should my child prepare for the evaluation?

They should not prepare. The point is to see where they actually are — cramming makes the diagnostic less useful. Have them get a good night's sleep, eat before the session, and bring their normal energy. Nothing else.

Can we do the evaluation on Zoom?

Yes, for families who cannot come to the Upper West Side. The in-person evaluation is slightly better because the teacher can observe body language and problem-solving process more clearly, but Zoom is a full alternative. Both include the same written diagnostic report.

What ages does the evaluation cover?

Grades 1 through 12. The diagnostic content adjusts to age and grade — a first-grader gets number sense and early arithmetic; an 8th-grader targeting SHSAT gets algebra and problem-solving; an AP student gets pre-calculus and function analysis.

How do I book?

Use the booking form on this page or call (646) 668-6151. We schedule evaluations Monday-Friday 3-10pm, Saturday 9-6, and Sunday 10-5. Most families are able to book within the same week.
