Months 1–3: foundations diagnostic & gap filling
The most expensive mistake UWS families make is skipping this phase. A child who scores in the 80th percentile on school math tests is not automatically ready for ratio drills — they may have a hidden gap in integer rules or fraction operations that will surface as an unexplained wall in Month 5. Finding that gap in Month 1 costs nothing; finding it in Month 8 costs a month of backtracking.

A student who covers this thoroughly in months 7 and 8 should expect geometry questions to be among the most reliable point-earners on test day.
Month 9 introduces full 57-question math section practice for the first time. The goal is not a score — it is pacing data. How many questions answered in 90 minutes? Where does the student slow down? Are they being too careful on easy items, or rushing through medium ones they could solve with 15 more seconds? That data shapes months 10 and 11.
Months 10–12: timing drills, mock tests, taper week
Month 10 is targeted timing work. Most UWS students at this stage are not limited by content knowledge — they are limited by decision-making speed under pressure. Timing drills train the student to recognize question types quickly, skip and return efficiently, and avoid the three-minute rabbit hole on a single hard problem that costs five easier answers.
Month 11 is full mock tests under real conditions: full SHSAT format, both sections, timed, followed by a structured review of every missed item. Two to three full mocks in month 11 is appropriate; more than that with insufficient review between them produces diminishing returns.
The taper week before the test should be light review only: one short problem set per day, nothing new, rest and logistics. Trying to cram a topic the student never fully learned in a single week adds anxiety without adding accuracy. Trust the twelve months.
Common UWS family mistakes (and what to do instead)
- Starting in 8th grade. The SHSAT is taken in October of 8th grade, which means an 8th-grade start gives you approximately eight to ten weeks of prep — not twelve months. That is enough to maintain a student who already has strong foundations, not enough to build them. If your child is already in 8th grade, do not panic; focus every remaining week on their highest-leverage gaps and get realistic about which schools are achievable.
- Volume over structure. Doing three hours of unguided Khan Academy practice produces far less than one hour of structured problem-solving with a teacher who can catch a misconception before it calcifies. Time on task matters; what you do during that time matters more.
- Chasing cutoff scores. The SHSAT composite cutoff for Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and the other six schools shifts every year. It has historically hovered in the high 500s out of 800 for Stuyvesant, but that number moves. The actionable target is raw accuracy, not a score. A student who misses fewer than ten math questions will be in a competitive position for most schools on the list regardless of where the cutoff lands in any given year.
- Treating all eight schools as equivalently competitive. The gap between Stuyvesant and HSMSE at CCNY in terms of required composite score is real and meaningful. A student who is unlikely to reach Stuyvesant is not a failure — they may be a strong match for Brooklyn Latin, HSAS at Lehman, or Queens HS for the Sciences at York, all of which are excellent schools. Build the list realistically in month 6 once you have real mock data.
- Enrolling in a program that does not have genuine SHSAT depth. General math enrichment is not SHSAT prep.
