SOMATH Classes June 2026 — UWS Math Enrichment with Marcelo Ambrozio
Three small-group sessions on consecutive Wednesdays in June — June 10, 17, and 24, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM — covering number sense, addition and subtraction, and word problems with mental math. Taught by co-founder Marcelo Ambrozio at 226 W 79th Street. $270 per student.

The June series is built as a focused three-week intensive. Each session is 90 minutes long, all three sessions are at the same time, and the classes are held at our UWS classroom — not online and not at a partner location.

The three-session syllabus
The three topics are sequenced deliberately. Each one builds on the previous session, and together they cover the conceptual foundation that early-elementary students need before they can do real reasoning with larger numbers, fractions, and multi-step problems later in the year.
Session 1 — Number Sense and Place Value (June 10)
Number sense is the single best predictor of how a child will do with every other piece of math they encounter through 8th grade. In this session students work on what numbers actually mean — not just how to read them. We cover place value (ones, tens, hundreds, and how the columns relate), comparing and ordering numbers, decomposing numbers into useful parts (a 47 is also a 40 + 7, or a 50 - 3, or two 20s plus a 7), and the patterns that make mental arithmetic possible later. Students who leave with strong place value rarely struggle with multi-digit addition and subtraction; students who don’t spend years compensating with memorized procedures that fall apart at the first non-standard problem.
Session 2 — Addition and Subtraction (June 17)
This session builds directly on the place value work from Session 1 and applies it to fluent, flexible addition and subtraction. We focus on strategies, not just the standard algorithm: making tens (8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3), counting up for subtraction (47 - 38 = 39 to 47 = 9), using known facts to derive unknown ones (if I know 6 + 6 = 12, then 6 + 7 must be 13), and regrouping with understanding rather than borrowing as a mystery rule. Students who learn addition and subtraction this way end up faster and more accurate than students who memorize a procedure, because they can check their work by trying a second strategy.
Session 3 — Word Problems and Mental Math (June 24)
The final session is where the foundations come together. Word problems are where most elementary students hit a wall, and the wall is rarely about arithmetic — it’s about reading mathematically. We teach a clear approach: read the problem twice, identify the question first, identify the relevant numbers second, decide whether the situation calls for addition or subtraction, and estimate before computing. Mental math runs throughout: not as speed drills, but as the habit of looking at a problem and noticing the easiest path. By the end of the session students will have worked through word problems aloud, in writing, and as a small group — the same way mathematicians actually work on problems.
Who is teaching: Marcelo Ambrozio
Marcelo Ambrozio is the co-founder and lead math teacher at SOMATH. He teaches the June 2026 series himself — not a substitute, not a teaching assistant. Marcelo has spent more than a decade teaching math to NYC students across the full K–12 range, from early-elementary number sense through SHSAT preparation, AP Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB & BC.
The decision to have the lead teacher run summer kickoff classes is deliberate. Families thinking about SOMATH for the fall school year get to see the actual instruction, the way the teacher pushes students to explain their thinking, and the small-group dynamic up close. By the end of the third session you’ll know whether SOMATH’s pedagogy is right for your child — not in the abstract, but from three weeks of direct observation.
Who these classes are for
The June series is calibrated for early-elementary learners building foundational number skills — roughly grades 1 through 3, with placement based on a brief diagnostic conversation rather than a strict grade cutoff. The cohort works best for:
- Students entering 2nd or 3rd grade in the fall who would benefit from a focused refresh of number sense and addition/subtraction before the school year starts.
- Advanced kindergarteners and 1st graders whose number sense is genuinely ready for the next level. Bring them by for a chat with Marcelo and we’ll confirm fit before enrolling.
- 4th graders who are still building fluency with multi-digit addition/subtraction or who freeze on word problems. The foundational work here matters more than rushing them ahead.
- UWS families who want to try SOMATH before committing to a fall course. Three weeks is a real preview — long enough to see how your child responds to small-group instruction, short enough that you’re not locked in.

What $270 covers
Pricing is simple. The full three-session June series is $270 per student, which covers all 4.5 hours of small-group instruction with Marcelo at our 226 W 79th Street classroom. That works out to $60 per hour, the same rate as our standard course pricing, with no separate materials or registration fees.

What if my child misses a session?
The three sessions build on each other, so we strongly recommend attending all three. If your child misses a session, we’ll send the worksheets home and Marcelo will spend a few minutes catching them up at the start of the following session. The series is intentionally sequenced, so a missed Session 1 makes Session 2 harder to land — please plan around the dates if you can.
Is there a fall continuation?
Yes — SOMATH runs ongoing courses in the fall academic year at our standard $60/hr rate, with 4-month packages running $1,440–$1,920 depending on weekly hours. Families who complete the June series and decide to continue do not pay any additional registration fee. You’ll know by the end of Session 3 whether SOMATH is the right ongoing program for your child — that’s the point of running the June series with the lead teacher.
