The short version. SOMATH summer runs June – August 2026 in our 226 W 79th Street classroom on the Upper West Side. Tracks are built for grades 1–12: elementary fluency (Little Newtons, Kid Einsteins), middle school enrichment and SHSAT prep, pre-AP Calculus, AP Calc AB/BC review, Digital SAT math, and college math catch-up. Why summer math actually matters on the Upper West Side

UWS public school students are some of the strongest in the city — but the school-year math experience is uneven. Some classrooms are accelerated; some hold back the top half of the room to keep the middle moving; some teach a brilliant curriculum but with thirty kids per teacher; some have rotating staff. The result, year after year, is the same pattern: students who do nothing over the summer arrive in September having quietly lost three to six weeks of math. Students who do too much — drill packets, online platforms without a teacher — arrive bored, faster but not deeper. The right summer math program does two things at once: locks in what was learned, and opens up what is coming next.

That is the entire design behind SOMATH summer. Every track has a "review and lock" phase in June and a "preview and stretch" phase in July and August. By Labor Day, students walk into their UWS public school classrooms not just caught up, but a half-step ahead.

Programs offered, by age

Elementary (Grades 1–5) — Little Newtons & Kid Einsteins

Foundational number sense, place value, fact fluency, fractions, and early word problems. Built for students at PS 87, PS 199, PS 9, PS 84, PS 166, PS 452, PS 145, PS 163, PS 165, PS 75, PS 333 Manhattan School for Children, and similar elementaries. Two to three sessions per week, 60 minutes each, in groups of six.

Middle School (Grades 6–8) — Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, SHSAT

For rising 6th–8th graders at MS 245 The Computer School, The Anderson School, MS 247 Dual Language, MS 258 Community Action, MS 243 Center School, JHS 54 Booker T. Washington, Lafayette Academy, and West Prep. Algebra readiness, exponents, percents, geometry, and the full SHSAT math curriculum for rising 8th graders aiming at Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, and the rest of the eight specialized high schools.

High School (Grades 9–12) — Pre-AP Calc, AP Calc AB/BC, Digital SAT

For students at LaGuardia, Frank McCourt, West End Secondary, Manhattan Hunter Science, Beacon, Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and independent schools across the West Side. Pre-AP Calc summer track (so students don't see limits for the first time in September), full AP Calc AB and BC review, Digital SAT math (multiple-choice + grid-in), and college calc catch-up for incoming freshmen.

Enrichment & Test Prep — Young Fermats, AP Stats, AMC, Math Olympiad

For students who are already accelerated and want stretch problems, contest math, AMC 8/10/12 prep, AP Statistics summer head-start, and the kind of beautiful problems most curricula skip. Small groups, deep dives, no worksheet stacks.

Below is the full list of Upper West Side public schools (District 3 and the slice of District 2 between 59th and 110th, Riverside to Central Park West). If your child attends any of these, the SOMATH summer track is built to map directly onto what they will see in September.

We also serve students from the eight specialized high schools — Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Brooklyn Latin, HSAS @ Lehman, HSMSE, Queens HSSE, and Staten Island Tech — many of whom live on the UWS and commute downtown.

What a typical SOMATH summer week looks like

Each cohort meets two to three times per week, usually 60 to 90 minutes per session depending on the track. Cohorts are six to eight students. Every session has the same shape: a 5-minute warm-up that activates last session's work, a 20–30 minute new-topic block with whiteboard problems, a 20-minute guided practice in mixed-ability pairs, and a 5–10 minute wrap that previews the next session. No worksheet stacks. No screens unless the topic genuinely benefits from Desmos or GeoGebra.

Parents get a short written update at the end of each two-week module — what was covered, what the student did well, where the gap is, and the homework for the next two weeks. Honest, specific, and short. The same way we communicate during the school year.

Pricing & registration

Group rates make summer enrichment one of the most cost-effective ways to improve a student's math year over year — significantly less than equivalent one-on-one tutoring, with the added benefit of peers at the same level. We publish pricing transparently after the free evaluation, so families can match the right track without surprise. Checks payable to SOMATH LLC. We accept Zelle, ACH, and major cards.

Registration opens in early spring 2026. Spots fill first-come, first-served because we cap each cohort at eight. Families who book the free evaluation by early March typically get first pick of the schedule.

How we differ from the other summer options on the Upper West Side

Most UWS families have already tried at least one of the alternatives: a national chain center, an online math platform with adaptive questions, an in-school enrichment that meets twice a week with a rotating teacher. We hear the same feedback every September: the chain center moved too slowly and used too many worksheets; the platform was great for fact fluency but did nothing for word problems or proof; the in-school option was wonderful but inconsistent. SOMATH is built for the third path — small groups, expert teachers, whiteboards always, and a curriculum that connects K–5 fluency to middle-school SHSAT prep to AP Calc. Same teachers all summer. FAQ

What grades do SOMATH summer programs serve?

Kindergarten through 12th grade, with tracks for every level from foundational number sense to AP Calc BC and college-prep statistics. Most rising 4th–10th graders see the biggest jump — the years when the curriculum gets dense fastest.

Do you offer in-person or online?

Summer is in-person at 226 W 79th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam. We find that in-person small groups produce a deeper jump in confidence and problem-solving than any online option we have tested. We do offer year-round online for families who travel and want continuity.

My child is at an independent school, not a UWS public school. Can they still join?

Absolutely. About 40% of our summer roster is independent school students (Dalton, Trinity, Collegiate, Riverdale, Horace Mann, Hunter College HS, Brearley, Spence, and others). The tracks are built around math content, not school affiliation. The free evaluation places every student precisely.

Is SHSAT prep too late if my child starts in summer?

Not at all — summer is the ideal start. Most students who score above 650 on SHSAT math start prep four to six months before the test, and summer is exactly that window for the fall sitting. Starting in September is also possible but tighter; we tell families honestly when timing is the bigger constraint than ability.
