When Should My Child Actually Start Algebra? A teacher's honest answer.

Grade level is the worst possible signal for Algebra readiness. Here are the four things I test for at the kitchen table — and what to do if your child isn't quite there yet.

Every spring I get the same question from a dozen Upper West Side parents: "My daughter is in 6th grade. Should she be in Algebra next year?" Or, more often, the worried version — "His school is pushing him into Algebra and I don't think he's ready. Am I crazy?"

You're not crazy. The honest answer is that Algebra readiness has almost nothing to do with what grade your child is in, and almost everything to do with four very specific skills. If those four are solid, a kid in 6th grade can fly through Algebra I. If they aren't, a strong 9th grader will still hit a wall by November.

I've taught Algebra to thousands of students over twenty years — some who started at ten, some who started at fifteen — and the single best predictor of whether a kid will love the subject or hate it isn't age. It's whether the foundation underneath is actually finished.

What Algebra actually demands

Before we talk about readiness, it's worth being precise about what Algebra I really asks of a student. Not the topic list — the underlying skill list.

Algebra is the first subject in school math where the rules stop being about specific numbers and start being about relationships between numbers. A child who is fluent with arithmetic — who can compute — but who has never been asked to think about why arithmetic works will struggle here. Not because they're not smart. Because the question being asked has changed.

The kid who thrives in Algebra is the kid who, when you ask them "what is one half of two thirds," doesn't reach for a procedure. They picture it. They know that two thirds means something, and half of that something is a smaller something, and they can name it. That's the skill Algebra is built on top of. If it's missing, Algebra feels like memorizing rules in a foreign language. If it's there, Algebra feels like it was waiting for them.

The four readiness signals I test for

Forget grade levels. When a parent asks me whether their child is ready for Algebra, I run through these four things. You can do the same at the kitchen table this weekend.

Algebra readiness — four signals to test at home

  • Fluency with fractions. Can your child add 2/3 + 3/4 without panic, multiply 5/6 × 9/10, and tell you what 7/8 of 16 is — without a calculator and without freezing?
  • Comfort with negative numbers. What is −7 + 12? What is −5 × −3? What is 4 − (−6)? If they have to think about what the rules are rather than what's happening, the foundation isn't set yet.
  • Ratio and proportional reasoning. If 4 notebooks cost $14, what do 10 cost? Can they set this up and solve it without being taught a procedure first?
  • Solving for an unknown with one variable. If 3x + 5 = 20, what is x? Most schools introduce this in late elementary. The question is whether your child can do it confidently, not whether they've seen it.

Notice what's not on this list: graphing, exponents, the quadratic formula, factoring. Those are Algebra topics. They get taught in Algebra. The four above are the prerequisites. If any one of them is shaky, Algebra is going to feel like building a second floor on a house with a weak first floor — every new topic adds weight, and at some point things crack.

The single best predictor of Algebra success isn't age or school placement. It's whether fractions, negatives, ratios, and one-variable equations are fluent — not just familiar.

What "fluent" means (and doesn't)

Parents sometimes tell me, "Oh he can do fractions, his school covered it last year." Covered isn't fluent. Fluent means the answer comes within five seconds, with confidence, and they can explain why.

Here's a quick test I use. Ask your child: which is larger, 3/8 or 5/12? A child who has covered fractions will reach for common denominators and grind it out. A child who is fluent might do that, but they might also say "well, 3/8 is a little less than half, and 5/12 is a little less than half, but 5/12 is closer to half, so it's bigger." That's the kind of flexible thinking Algebra rewards.

The same applies to negatives. A kid who says "negative times negative equals positive because that's the rule" hasn't really built a model. A kid who says "if I owe you five dollars three times, I owe you fifteen — but if you take away three of those debts, I have fifteen more dollars" — that kid is ready.

The most common wrong reason to push Algebra early

On the Upper West Side, a lot of parents push for Algebra in 7th grade because the path "Algebra in 7th, Geometry in 8th, Algebra II in 9th" is what gets you to AP Calculus BC by senior year. That's a real concern, especially for kids targeting STEM programs at MIT or Stanford. I'm not going to pretend it isn't.

But I had a 7th grader last fall whose mother had pushed for the accelerated track and the school agreed. By October he was getting 60s on Algebra quizzes. He wasn't a weak student — he was a confused student. Two months in, he didn't have the fraction fluency he needed, so when we hit "solve 3/4 x − 1/2 = 5/8," he was solving two problems at once: the Algebra problem and the fraction problem. He failed both.

We pulled him back, spent ten weeks rebuilding the foundation, and put him back into Algebra in the spring. He finished the year with an A. He's now a year "behind" the accelerated track, and entirely ahead in every way that matters. Confidence, mastery, and an actual understanding of what he's doing.

What to do if your child isn't ready yet

The fix isn't to push harder on Algebra. The fix is to go backward and finish the foundation cleanly. We don't push kids through topics they haven't mastered. We finish fractions before we start equations.

If your child shows up shaky on the four signals above, here's what works:

A motivated child working on this for fifteen minutes a day for two months can close almost any prerequisite gap. The trick is not skipping ahead and not giving up. Both are common.

So, when should they start?

When the foundation is finished. Not before. For most kids that falls somewhere between late 6th grade and early 8th grade. For some, earlier. For some, a year later. None of those outcomes predicts what they'll do in college. What predicts college outcomes is whether they actually understood the math they learned, all the way down.

You leave with a written summary of exactly which of the four signals are solid and which need work, plus a plan. You're not signing up for anything. You're just getting an honest read.

That's the conversation I wish more parents had before pushing Algebra.
