Short answer. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute math competition for 8th graders and below, held every January by the Mathematical Association of America. It tests problem-solving on pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. A cold-open score for a bright 8th grader is typically 8-11; a competitive score is 18+; anything above 22 is genuinely rare. Serious prep takes 6-12 months of weekly problem sets on past AMC 8 exams and the Art of Problem Solving curriculum. It is a strong complement to SHSAT prep for NYC families, especially in 6th and 7th grade before SHSAT prep intensifies. Start early. Solve real problems, not textbook drills. Time yourself. 1. What the AMC 8 actually is

The AMC 8 (American Mathematics Competition 8) is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice math competition for students in 8th grade or below. It is administered by the Mathematical Association of America, run every January, and taken worldwide by tens of thousands of students. The problems test mathematical reasoning and problem-solving — not curriculum coverage. There is no penalty for wrong answers, calculators are not allowed, and the exam is closed-book.

The AMC 8 sits at the entry level of the AMC ladder: AMC 8 → AMC 10 → AMC 12 → AIME → USAMO. Strong AMC 8 performance qualifies a student for informal recognition and, more importantly, positions them well for AMC 10 in the following years. The problems are hard in a specific way: they reward creative reasoning, pattern recognition, and confidence with elementary techniques used in non-obvious combinations. A student who has memorized formulas but never wrestled with a genuinely non-standard problem will get roughly a middle score. A student who has solved 500+ hard problems will do considerably better.

2. The 5 content areas and their weights

The AMC 8 distribution shifts year to year, but the broad shape is stable. Here is what to expect:

Two content notes matter for NYC families. First, geometry and counting/probability together make up nearly half the exam. These are the two areas most students under-prepare for — especially counting/probability, which most middle schools barely touch. A student who is strong in algebra but has done zero counting problems will consistently miss 5-6 questions they could have answered.

Second, the AMC 8 tests problem-solving, not curriculum. A student in a strong Algebra 1 class will find the algebra questions easier — but a student who has never seen a competition-style problem will find every problem harder than school math, because the questions are structured to require a non-obvious step. This is why competition prep is different from school prep, and why doing more textbook problems does not help.

3. Scoring, awards, and what counts as competitive

Raw scoring

One point per correct answer, zero for wrong or blank. Maximum score 25. There is no guessing penalty. That means on hard problems where a student can eliminate two of five choices, guessing has positive expected value — a subtle strategic point worth teaching.

MAA award thresholds (approximate, vary each year)

  • Distinguished Honor Roll — roughly the top 1% (typically 22-25).
  • Honor Roll — roughly the top 5% (typically 19-21).
  • Achievement Roll — for students in 6th grade or below scoring above a set threshold.
  • Certificate of Achievement — awarded for a perfect score.
What counts as competitive for a NYC middle-schooler.
  • 15-18: strong for a bright, motivated student. Signals genuine mathematical ability.
  • 19-21: excellent. Honor Roll territory. Meaningful positive signal for selective high school applications.
  • 22-25: exceptional. Distinguished Honor Roll or better. Genuinely rare and a strong differentiator.
  • An unprepared 8th grader typically scores 7-11. A prepared 7th grader can beat that comfortably.

4. Honest timeline: when to start

The single most common mistake NYC families make with the AMC 8 is starting too late. A parent who reads about the AMC 8 in October and decides to start prep in November is not doing serious prep — they are cramming for a competition that rewards accumulated problem-solving stamina. Here is the honest map:

For 6th and 7th graders taking the AMC 8 in 8th grade, the natural cadence is: 6th grade — introduce competition problems (30 min/week); 7th grade — weekly problem sets and past-exam practice (60-90 min/week); 8th grade fall — intensive weekly full-length practice with detailed review. For a student taking the exam in 7th grade, compress the same plan into two years starting in 5th.

5. A 6-month week-by-week study plan

This plan assumes a student with a baseline score of ~10-12 targeting a final score of 18-22. Adjust up or down based on your child's diagnostic. Weekly commitment: about 90 minutes.

Weeks 1-4 — Foundation & diagnostic (July)

Goal: take a baseline. Learn the exam. Cover fundamentals. Weekly: take one full past AMC 8 (untimed the first, timed thereafter), then spend an hour reviewing every missed problem with a teacher or the AoPS video solution. Rotate through: AMC 8 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021. Do NOT look up answers before genuinely trying every problem for at least 3 minutes.

Weeks 5-8 — Number theory (August)

Goal: master divisibility, primes, LCM/GCD, digit puzzles. Weekly: work through 2 chapters of AoPS Introduction to Number Theory plus 20 mixed problems from past AMC 8s tagged as number theory. Time yourself on each problem — aim for under 90 seconds per problem, and force yourself to move on if you get stuck. Come back to hard ones at the end.

Weeks 9-12 — Counting & probability (September)

Goal: master casework, complementary counting, probability of independent and dependent events. Weekly: AoPS Introduction to Counting & Probability chapters 1-4, plus 20 counting problems from past AMC 8s. This is the highest-leverage 4 weeks — counting/probability is the area where most students improve fastest.

Weeks 13-16 — Geometry & algebra (October)

Goal: tighten geometric intuition, especially similar triangles and coordinate geometry. Practice translating word problems into equations quickly. Weekly: take one timed past AMC 8, review every miss. Do 20 mixed geometry + algebra problems. Focus on the “draw a picture first” discipline.

Weeks 17-20 — Mixed practice (November)

Goal: build stamina and pacing. Weekly: two full timed AMC 8s (from 2015-2020, which are slightly harder than more recent exams). Detailed review of every miss. Track score progression on a simple spreadsheet — you want to see steady upward trend.

Weeks 21-24 — Peak prep & strategy (December-January)

Goal: peak on test day. Weekly: one full timed AMC 8 under strict test conditions (same time of day if possible, no interruptions), plus review sessions on any repeated weak areas. In the last two weeks, back off intensity — the goal is to be sharp and rested, not exhausted.

The single most important habit. Time every practice problem. Set a timer for 90 seconds per problem, and force yourself to move on if you have not made progress. On the real exam, an average pace of 96 seconds per problem is exactly what 40 minutes / 25 questions demands. Students who cannot pace during practice will run out of time on test day even if their math is strong.

6. Where to take the AMC 8 in NYC

For 2026 registration, families should:

  1. Ask your school first. Many NYC schools (public and independent) administer the AMC 8 in-house. If your school does, that is the simplest option.
  2. Check MAA-listed test sites. The MAA website lists external test sites accepting registrations each fall. Historically NYC options have included Art of Problem Solving Academy Manhattan, various Kumon centers, and math circles.
  3. Register by October. The registration window closes several weeks before the January exam. Do not wait until December.

7. AMC 8 vs SHSAT: how they fit together

The most common NYC-parent question about the AMC 8 is: “How does this fit with SHSAT prep?” Honest answer: the two overlap heavily in the underlying skills, but they are very different in style. The SHSAT is a longer, straighter test with an Algebra 1 footprint and multiple ELA sections. The AMC 8 is shorter, harder per-question, and purely math. The natural fit:

6th grade Focus on AMC 8 prep. Introduce competition problem-solving. Foundational algebra concepts. Zero SHSAT-specific prep yet.
7th grade Continue AMC 8 (take the January exam). By spring, transition into SHSAT diagnostic and start pre-algebra to Algebra 1. AMC 8 becomes optional.
8th grade All-in on SHSAT prep. AMC 8 can be taken again if the student wants to (they qualify through 8th grade), but it is a bonus, not the priority.
The overlap AMC 8 problem-solving skills genuinely transfer to SHSAT math. A student who scores 18+ on the AMC 8 has an outstanding SHSAT trajectory ahead of them.

8. Is it worth doing?

The honest answer depends on the child.

  1. Yes, if your child genuinely enjoys math problems for their own sake and wants to be stretched. The AMC 8 is a clean, meritocratic signal — there is no admissions committee, just a score. Kids who like math tend to love the AMC 8.
  2. Yes, if you are targeting selective high schools that look at competition performance (Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Hunter, and top independents). A strong AMC 8 score is not required but it is a positive signal that transcript grades alone cannot provide.
  3. Maybe, if your child is on the fence about math. Trying AMC 8 problems for 8-12 weeks is a good diagnostic — some kids catch fire, others discover they prefer other subjects. Both outcomes are useful information.
  4. No, if your child does not enjoy math and you are considering it primarily for admissions leverage. The time is better spent on SHSAT prep, writing skills, or another subject where the child is genuinely motivated.
