1. What the SHSAT is and why it matters
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the entrance exam to NYC's eight specialized high schools. It is the only criterion. Grades do not factor in. Teacher recommendations do not factor in. Auditions and portfolios do not factor in. Your composite SHSAT score is compared to that year's cutoff for each school, in the order the student ranked them, and the student gets the highest-ranked school whose cutoff they met. That structural simplicity is why families take SHSAT prep so seriously: a 30-point swing on test day can be the difference between Stuyvesant and Brooklyn Latin, or between an offer and no offer at all.
The eight specialized high schools are widely considered among the strongest public schools in the country. Stuyvesant graduates have produced four Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners. Bronx Science has produced more Nobel laureates in physics than any other secondary school in the world. The opportunity is real — and so is the competition. Roughly 25,000 to 30,000 students take the SHSAT each year, competing for around 4,000 to 5,000 seats. The acceptance rate sits in the high teens.
2. Exam structure (2026 computer-adaptive format)
The 2026 SHSAT is a fully digital, computer-adaptive test (CAT). Three things you need to know about that change:
- The test adapts to performance. Answer a moderate-difficulty question correctly and the next question is harder; answer it wrong and the next question is easier. The early questions in each section therefore carry outsized weight in calibrating the difficulty path a student travels through the test.
- Most questions are one-way. In the Math section and for standalone ELA questions, students cannot revisit a question after submitting their answer. Once you advance, the question is locked. In ELA passage-based sets, students can revise within a set until they submit the set as a whole.
- The standards have not changed. The content is the same as 2024 and 2025 — Grades 6–8 math (no calculator) and standard reading comprehension plus revising/editing. The DOE has been explicit that the CAT change is about adaptive sequencing, not new content.
Why the CAT change matters for prep. Under the old paper SHSAT, students could skip a hard question, work the rest of the section, and come back. Many top scorers used that as a core strategy — a 30-second triage pass first, the easy 35 questions next, then the hard 12 at the end with whatever time remained. That strategy is dead. In 2026, students must decide on each question as it appears, with no return path in Math and standalone ELA. That changes prep in two concrete ways. First, untimed practice has to start earlier — accuracy on first-look has to be 85%+ before timed practice begins, because the test now penalizes hesitation. Second, mental triage skills (recognize the problem type in under 5 seconds, decide whether to commit time or guess) become explicit training targets, not byproducts.

ELA breakdown: roughly 9–11 revising/editing items (split between standalone items and a passage-based set) and six reading comprehension passages with 6–10 questions each. Of those six passages, expect 3–4 informational texts, 1–2 literary passages, and 1 poem. Reading comprehension tests inference, central idea, vocabulary in context, structure, and author's purpose.
Math breakdown: roughly 5 grid-in (fill-in) questions and 52 multiple-choice (4 answer choices). The math is no-calculator. Content spans pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, percents and ratios, probability and statistics, and word problems. The hardest items typically combine two domains — for example, a percent problem layered onto a coordinate geometry setup.
3. How scoring actually works (and the cutoff trap)
Here is the part that catches most families off guard. Each section's 47 scored raw answers are converted to a scaled score of 100 to 350 using a non-linear, piecewise curve. The two section scores are then added to produce a composite of 200 to 700. A perfect raw score (47/47 on both sections) produces roughly a 700. The technical maximum is 800, but the curve almost never goes there.
Two scoring facts you must internalize:
- There is no penalty for wrong answers. Answer every single question. Guessing has positive expected value.
- The curve is steepest at the top. Moving from 35/47 correct to 36/47 correct adds fewer points than moving from 44/47 to 45/47. That is why students aiming at Stuyvesant must train accuracy in the hardest 8–10 questions per section — those final correct answers are worth disproportionately more than the middle of the distribution.

Cutoffs shift year-over-year based on how many students apply and the overall score distribution. The 2026 cutoffs are the most recent data points; treat them as targets, not guarantees.
The cutoff trap. Many families fixate on the Stuyvesant cutoff and define success as 561 or above. That is the wrong framing. A 535 puts a student into HSMSE; a 510 puts them into Brooklyn Tech, Staten Island Tech, or HSAS-Lehman. Define success by the range of schools the student will be happy attending, then prep to comfortably clear the cutoff for the highest school in that range — usually 30 to 40 points above the cutoff, to absorb test-day variance.
4. The 12-month SOMATH study plan
This is the plan we use for rising 8th graders who start in the summer before 8th grade. It is the gold standard — long enough to build content fluency, then layer strategy, then accumulate full-length practice tests. Three phases:
Phase 1: Foundations (June–August, summer before 8th grade)
Lock in middle school math content: percents, ratios, exponents, linear equations, systems, geometry basics (area/perimeter/volume), probability fundamentals. Build reading speed (target: 350 words/minute with 80%+ comprehension) and vocabulary. Two 90-minute small-group sessions per week. No timed full-length tests yet. Goal: be solid on 60–70% of the content before September.
Phase 2: Strategy & Sectional Practice (September–mid-October)
Introduce SHSAT-specific question patterns: how the test asks word problems, the four flavors of revising/editing items, the inference structure of reading comprehension, and the CAT adaptive logic (early questions matter most). Daily timed sections — 30 questions in 45 minutes, alternating ELA and Math. Begin a written error log: every wrong answer gets a one-sentence explanation of the mistake and a one-sentence rule to avoid it next time.
Phase 3: Full-Length Practice (mid-October–test week)
One full-length timed test per week, plus a 60-minute review session. Target six to eight total full-length tests. The last full-length test should be 7 days before the actual SHSAT — close enough to be sharp, far enough to recover. The final week is light review, sleep, and confidence work — no new content.
Total time commitment: 5–7 hours per week from June through November. That is the right intensity for the vast majority of students. Pushing past 10 hours per week tends to backfire — burnout, brittle accuracy, and resentment.
5. The 6-month compressed plan
For families who start in late spring or early summer of 8th-grade year, here is the compressed version. It works, but the margin for error shrinks.
Weeks 1–6 (June–mid-July): Foundations sprint
Three 90-minute sessions per week. Same content as Phase 1 of the 12-month plan, but compressed to six weeks. Diagnostic test in week 1 to identify the 3–4 weakest content domains; spend disproportionate time there.
Weeks 7–14 (mid-July–mid-September): Strategy
SHSAT-specific patterns. Daily 30-minute sectional drills. Two full-length tests during this phase, both untimed initially (build accuracy first, then layer in the timer).
Weeks 15–22 (mid-September–November): Full-length
One full-length per week, all timed. Six to seven total full-length tests. Final test 7 days before SHSAT day.
Time commitment on the 6-month plan: 8–10 hours per week. That is real. Families considering this plan should know going in: it works for motivated students, but it requires nearly two hours of math/reading every weekday plus a substantial weekend block.
6. The 7 most common mistakes families make
We have prepped hundreds of students for the SHSAT. The mistakes are remarkably consistent.
1. Starting too late. Beginning in September of 8th grade is the single most common pattern, and it is too tight. The student spends Phase 1 (content) while also trying to do Phase 2 (strategy) and Phase 3 (practice tests). Quality suffers everywhere.
2. Skipping the diagnostic. Families pick a plan or a class without first measuring what the student actually knows. The result is wasted time on content the student has already mastered, and underprepared exposure to the content that actually matters.
3. Practice tests without review. Taking a full-length test is half the work. Reviewing every wrong answer — in writing, with a teacher — is the other half. Students who skip the review get a snapshot of their current score but learn nothing that moves it.
4. Neglecting ELA. Math-strong students often coast through reading comprehension on the assumption that they "just read normally." But SHSAT ELA tests very specific skills (inference from one sentence, central idea across a 600-word passage, parallel structure in revising/editing) that need explicit practice. Half the score is half the score.
5. Calculator dependence. Students who use calculators at school for routine arithmetic struggle on the no-calculator SHSAT. Six months of mental math drill (multiplication tables to 25, common fractions to decimals, perfect squares and cubes, percent shortcuts) closes the gap.
6. Cramming the final week. The week before the SHSAT should be the lightest week of the entire plan. Light review, full sleep, full nutrition, light exercise. Cramming on Sunday before a Tuesday test produces a tired, anxious student.
7. Ranking only Stuyvesant. A student who ranks only Stuyvesant on the application gets one of two outcomes: Stuyvesant or no specialized school at all. Ranking all eight schools — in true preference order — costs nothing and dramatically increases the chance of an offer.

8. Practice strategies that actually move scores
Build the error log from day one. Every wrong answer goes into a notebook (paper or digital) with two lines: (1) one-sentence diagnosis of the mistake — "I confused mean and median," "I read 'less than' as 'less than or equal to,'" "I skipped the unit conversion." (2) one-sentence rule to apply next time — "Reread the question's exact comparator before computing," "Always convert to common units before computing." After 60–80 entries, patterns emerge. The error log is the highest-leverage SHSAT prep artifact — far more valuable than another practice test.
Calibrate time by section, not by question. The SHSAT gives a flat 180 minutes total. Train students to spend roughly 90 minutes per section but to use a soft target of 1 minute per question. If a question takes more than 90 seconds, mark a guess and move on. Coming back is no longer possible in the 2026 CAT — but if a student gets stuck, the loss is one question, not five.
For Math: prioritize speed on the easy 30 and accuracy on the hard 17. The 47 scored math questions split roughly into 30 routine and 17 hard. Routine questions are about speed: percent shortcuts, fraction-to-decimal recognition, mental arithmetic, recognizing standard problem types instantly. The hard 17 are about layered reasoning: a percent problem inside a coordinate geometry setup, a probability problem with a counting layer, a system of equations hidden in a word problem. Train both halves; the routine ones are where most score gains come from for students in the 480–550 range, and the hard ones are where Stuyvesant-bound students earn their final 30 points.
For Reading Comprehension: build the one-sentence summary habit. After every passage, before looking at the questions, write or whisper a single-sentence summary: "What is this passage about?" Students who skip this step routinely answer questions about details they remember while missing the central idea question that is worth the same point.
For Revising/Editing: memorize the four flavors. Revising/editing items test (1) parallel structure, (2) modifier placement, (3) sentence-level clarity and concision, and (4) paragraph-level coherence. Train recognition of each type. Two weeks of focused drill closes most of the gap.
Sleep is a scoring strategy. A well-rested student scores 20–40 points higher than the same student running on five hours of sleep. The week before the SHSAT, sleep is the most important variable. We tell families to back the bedtime up by 15 minutes per night starting two weeks before the test, so the student's body is already in an earlier rhythm. Caffeine on test morning is a personal call; the rule we give is that if the student does not drink caffeine in their normal routine, test day is not the day to start.
Use timed Pomodoro blocks for content review. Twenty-five minutes of focused practice, five minutes of rest, repeat for two to three cycles, then a longer break. This pattern matches the attention span of most 13-year-olds far better than 90-minute marathon sessions and produces more durable retention. The Pomodoro discipline also builds the time-awareness skill students will need on test day.
Mix problem types within a session. A common mistake is grinding a single topic for an entire session — 90 minutes of just percent problems, for example. Performance improves, but only within that narrow context. Mixed practice (a percent problem, then a geometry problem, then a reading passage, then back to percents) more closely mirrors test conditions and improves the student's ability to switch contexts, which is one of the silent skills the SHSAT tests.
Practice the "flag and move on" muscle. Every SHSAT-bound student needs to develop the discipline to skip a hard question after 90 seconds, choose the best educated guess, and move on without lingering. This is a learned skill, not a personality trait. Build it in practice sessions by setting a timer that beeps at 90 seconds for every question and forcing the student to commit when it does. Within two weeks the habit becomes automatic.
Review with the test in hand. When reviewing a practice test, the student should sit with the actual test booklet (or the printed PDF) and reconstruct each problem in writing, not just glance at an answer key. Reconstruction forces metacognition — the student has to articulate why the right answer is right and why their wrong answer felt right at the time. That gap between "felt right" and "is right" is where most SHSAT score gains live.

9. Frequently asked questions
When should my child start SHSAT prep?
Ideally the summer before 8th grade. Earlier (6th or 7th grade) is fine for building math and reading fundamentals, but full SHSAT-specific prep does not need to start until June of rising 8th-grade summer. Starting after Labor Day of 8th grade is possible but tight.
What's the difference between SHSAT prep and Hunter College HS prep?
Different test, different timing, different content. The Hunter College HS entrance exam is taken in 6th grade for 7th-grade entry, has its own format (essay + math + verbal), and overlaps only partially with SHSAT content. A student aiming at both schools needs two distinct prep arcs.
Do we need a prep course or can we self-study?
Self-study works for highly motivated, organized students with a strong baseline (PSAT-equivalent of about 1100+ in 7th grade). For most students, a small-group course adds accountability, peer pressure, expert error diagnosis, and an external timeline — the things that turn 12 months of intention into 12 months of execution.
How does the new computer-adaptive format change strategy?
The biggest practical change: early questions matter more. The CAT calibrates difficulty based on early performance, so a strong start in each section puts the student onto a higher-difficulty path with more scoring upside. Translation: do not rush the first 10 questions of either section. Take an extra 30–60 seconds on early items to lock in accuracy.
Is the SHSAT only for NYC public school students?
No. Any NYC resident enrolled in grade 8 (or grade 9 for the 9th-grade test) at a public, private, or parochial school is eligible. Non-public-school students register through their school counselor or directly via the DOE.
What if my child does not get a specialized high school offer?
The general high school match runs in parallel. Students rank up to 12 general high schools on the main NYC HS application; those matches are released in March alongside specialized high school offers. There are excellent non-specialized public high schools (Beacon, LaGuardia, Frank McCourt, Bard High School Early College, NYC iSchool, and many more) plus independent schools, where many SOMATH students also thrive.
