Start with the problem, not the tutor’s label
“Needs help in Precalculus” can mean several different things. A student may understand the new idea but make errors with fractions. Another may manipulate symbols correctly but misread a graph. A third may know the mathematics yet struggle to explain a model in a written response. Those students need different starting points.
Bring one recent test and a few homework problems the student could not complete independently. Ask the instructor to identify the step where the reasoning breaks down. A useful evaluation produces a specific next step, not merely “more practice.”

What SOMATH offers on the Upper West Side
Our AP Precalculus course meets in person at 226 W 79th St, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10024. The current Friday class is 6:00–8:00 PM, with a maximum of six students. The program uses a 24-class rolling syllabus; it is not advertised as a fixed 20-week package. Check the current schedule when planning attendance.
Published tuition is $800 per month plus the existing $99 one-time registration fee. Monthly membership is distinct from the length of the curriculum; families should review the enrollment terms on the course page rather than infer a total package price from the number of lessons.

What should exam preparation cover?
The AP exam assesses polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and polar functions. College Board’s Unit 4 is not assessed on the exam, although schools may teach it as additional course content (official framework).
For May 2027, the exam has 42 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions. Students answer multiple choice in Bluebook and handwrite free responses; using an older timing plan without checking the revision is a mistake (official exam format). Three useful readiness checks
- Explain a restriction: Why is x = 3 excluded from 1/(x − 3)?
- Connect representations: How does f(x − 2) change the graph of f?
- Interpret a model: What does the factor 1.08 mean in P(t) = 500(1.08)t when t is measured in years?
The answers are: division by zero is undefined; a horizontal shift two units right; and 8% growth per year. A student should be able to explain those answers, not only choose them. Try the domain practice and logarithm examples to explore the next level.
What grade should take Precalculus?
Grade alone is not a placement rule. SOMATH’s published AP Precalculus track serves grades 10–12, but the useful question is whether the student is prepared for its algebraic and functional reasoning. If those foundations need work, the evaluation can identify them before the student tries to keep up with unfamiliar material.
Choose support that builds independence
After a few meetings, ask whether the student can solve a similar unfamiliar problem without copying the tutor. A well-kept error log, clearer written solutions, and better explanations are concrete progress signals. A score guarantee or a long list of worksheets is not a substitute for those signals.
