For students genuinely trying to understand, these tools can be valuable. For students who want to finish homework without thinking, they are the fastest shortcut available.
Photomath, Microsoft Math Solver, Symbolab (image-based math solvers)
Photomath is particularly common among middle schoolers. Point your phone camera at a problem, get an immediate solution with steps. These tools were designed as checking tools — you do the work, then verify. In practice, that workflow has been reversed: photograph the problem first, then “check” the AI-generated answer. The distinction between checking and copying disappears quickly.
Khanmigo, Khan Academy’s AI tutor (educational guardrails)
Khanmigo is the most educationally sound option for K–12 math. Designed to avoid giving answers directly, it asks guiding questions and prompts students to explain their reasoning rather than simply solving on demand. This is the right design for learning. The limitation is that Khanmigo requires more effort than Photomath or ChatGPT — exactly why it is less popular among students who want fast answers.
Tools NYC schools quietly allow vs. block
Policies are inconsistent and largely unenforced for homework. After initially blocking ChatGPT in 2023, NYC DOE now encourages “thoughtful use” of AI in learning. For a student who missed the teacher’s explanation in a class of 28, this flexibility is genuinely valuable.
Generating practice problems at the right level. “Give me ten two-step equation problems, slightly harder than my last quiz” is a prompt that works. AI generates custom sets on demand, producing problems that do not appear in the textbook your child already has the answer key for.
Catching algebra mistakes in worked solutions. “Here is my solution — is my reasoning correct at each step?” turns AI into a checker rather than a replacement for thinking. Completing a problem first, then asking AI to audit it, is using it correctly.
Vocabulary and word-problem translation. AI is excellent at rephrasing problems in simpler language, identifying the operation embedded in a verbal description, and explaining notation. This is a legitimate support that does not bypass the mathematical thinking itself.
4. Where AI ruins math learning
These are not hypothetical risks. I see them in students who come to SOMATH after a year or more of heavy AI use. The patterns are consistent.
Skipping the productive struggle that builds memory
Learning is stronger when retrieval is effortful. When a student works through a problem they do not immediately know how to solve — trying an approach, getting stuck, rerouting — the neural pathway for that procedure is built durably. AI eliminates this process. The student who photographs a problem and reads a solution witnesses the math rather than learning it. The consequence shows up on tests: a vague memory of having “done this type before” but no ability to reconstruct the steps under pressure.
Wrong answers presented with total confidence (calculation errors, misread problems)
A student recently brought in a homework problem: “Simplify: (3x² − 12) ÷ (x − 2).” ChatGPT had factored the numerator as (3x + 6)(x − 2) and cancelled to arrive at 3x + 6. The factoring was wrong: 3x² − 12 factors as 3(x² − 4) = 3(x + 2)(x − 2), giving 3(x + 2). The final answer happened to match numerically — but in a slightly different problem, that error in the middle step would have propagated to a wrong answer. ChatGPT displayed the incorrect factoring with the same formatting and tone of authority as a correct solution. The student had no way to know. This happens regularly with multi-step algebra, fraction arithmetic, and any problem involving signs and exponents. These tools make mistakes confidently.
No transfer to closed-book tests (SHSAT, ISEE, SAT, AP)
Every high-stakes test NYC students face is closed-book and AI-free. The SHSAT is taken on paper in a 3-hour sitting without any tools. The ISEE, required by Brearley, Spence, Dalton, and Trinity, is similarly paper-based. The College Board AP exam policies explicitly prohibit AI in the testing room. The “I followed the steps but can’t reproduce them” trap
This is the version parents often miss because it looks like understanding. The student can narrate the solution: “First you factor, then you cancel, then you simplify.” What they cannot do is start from scratch on a novel problem of the same type. They built recognition, not the generative skill. This gap is invisible on homework and wide open on tests — it is the most common thing SOMATH tutors surface in the diagnostic.
5. The signal your child has crossed the line from tool to crutch
- Homework is done faster than it should be. A 20-problem algebra assignment that takes 10 minutes is a red flag. Genuine mathematical thinking takes time.
- They cannot explain how they solved a problem. Ask your child to walk you through one homework problem they just completed. If they cannot explain the steps in their own words, they did not do the thinking.
- Quiz and test scores are significantly lower than homework scores. If homework is consistently 90%+ but tests are 60–70%, the homework is not representative of what they can actually do.
- They become frustrated or resistant when asked to work without a device. A student who has internalized a process is not threatened by working on paper. One who has outsourced the process is.
