How much math should my child do over the summer?

For most students, one to two sessions per week (60–90 minutes each) is plenty to prevent summer learning loss and keep skills sharp without burning out. Three or more sessions per week is appropriate only for students who are actively catching up after a difficult school year, or for rising 8th graders in the final prep window before the October SHSAT. The goal is maintenance and moderate growth — not a summer school grind. If your child is leaving school in strong shape and just needs to stay sharp, two sessions per week of good instruction does that. If they are heading into a high-stakes test or have real gaps, three sessions may be warranted for a defined period (not the entire summer).

Is in-person better than online for summer math?

It depends on the student. Younger students (roughly K–6) generally benefit from in-person instruction: the whiteboard dynamic, real-time feedback, and peer interaction in a small group produce deeper engagement than a screen. Motivated middle and high schoolers — especially those who already work independently and are comfortable with self-direction — can do very well with structured online programs like AoPS Online or a live tutor via Brighterly. The honest answer: in-person is the default for elementary students; online is a viable and sometimes excellent choice for self-directed teenagers. A hybrid is also worth considering if your family travels in July.

What’s the cheapest legitimate summer math option in NYC?

Khan Academy is genuinely free and genuinely good for structured practice and video instruction. Their summer plan feature gives your child a structured daily curriculum at no cost. MoMath programs at 635 Sixth Ave in Chelsea are free with museum admission (roughly $25 for adults, $20 for children), and their summer programming — including Family Fridays and the NYC Math Festival on July 11 — is high quality. For families who need cost-free structured practice, Khan Academy is the honest first recommendation. For families who want in-person enrichment, MoMath visits are an inexpensive addition to any summer plan.

Do summer math programs help with SHSAT prep?

Yes — but only if the program is structured specifically around SHSAT content and strategy. Random worksheet practice does not build the test-taking skills the SHSAT requires. The SHSAT math section covers percents, ratios, fractions, geometry, and algebra through 8th grade, plus specific question formats that reward pattern recognition and strategy. Summer is the best preparation window for rising 8th graders because it provides two months of focused work before school and after-school activities resume. Programs that teach the right content with real test-taking strategy — not just adaptive drill — produce the results.

When should summer math start?

Most UWS families start in mid-June, roughly one to two weeks after public school ends, and wrap up by mid-August before school-year preparation begins. This gives a clean 8-week window. Some families start as early as the first week of June for more intensive SHSAT or SAT prep. The key is not to wait until late July — by then the summer is half gone and the most valuable prevention window (the first four to six weeks of summer) has already passed.
