Illustrative Mathematics (IM Math)
Illustrative Mathematics is the most widely adopted of the three across existing NYC Solves districts and the one most likely to appear at a D3 middle school. Lessons start not with instruction but with a short “warm-up” problem that activates prior knowledge; students then work in small groups on an activity that leads them to discover a concept before the teacher formalizes it. Homework problems are wordy, multi-step, and require written reasoning — nothing like a traditional drill sheet. The payoff is stronger conceptual understanding and the ability to handle novel problems. i-Ready Mathematics Classroom
i-Ready Mathematics Classroom from Curriculum Associates pairs structured classroom lessons with the widely used i-Ready digital diagnostic. Many NYC students have already taken that diagnostic; the classroom curriculum is a distinct product. It is more explicitly structured than IM Math, with clearer direct-instruction components — a format teachers managing large, mixed-readiness classes often prefer.
Amplify Desmos Mathematics
Amplify Desmos Mathematics is the newest of the three in NYC adoption and the most technology-dependent. Built in partnership with the nonprofit Desmos studio — the team behind the graphing calculator used on most state tests — it is visually interactive and exploration-driven. Lessons run through digital activities on the Desmos platform, giving students early familiarity with a tool they will use on Regents and SAT exams. Extension problems exist within each lesson and strong teachers use them — but in a mixed-readiness class of 28–30, they are not always reached. “What about advanced math tracks?”
District 3 has historically offered less formal middle school acceleration than District 2, which has had accelerated sequences allowing students to complete Algebra I or Geometry before high school. NYC Solves standardizes the on-grade-level sequence but does not create or eliminate accelerated tracks. “Less calculation practice?”
This is a legitimate critique. IM Math prioritizes conceptual understanding before procedures, meaning less class time on drilling multiplication facts or fraction algorithms. Critics — credible ones — argue that procedural fluency is a prerequisite for higher-order thinking, not something to defer. A child entering 6th grade without solid fact recall or fraction arithmetic will struggle because the curriculum assumes those skills and does not rebuild them. This concern is widely reported. IM Math problems are more verbal and open-ended than the “here is the rule, here are 20 problems” format most parents recognize. A typical problem: “A store sells juice in two sizes. The large costs 40% more. Is it always the better deal? Every teacher implementing a new curriculum is in an adjustment period in September. Go to open school night. Email the math teacher with one specific question about how differentiation works within the new curriculum. Teachers at MS 54, MS 245, and MS 247 will be navigating their own learning curve; a curious, engaged parent is a much easier conversation than an adversarial one.
