What students learn

SOMATH Regents Geometry and Trigonometry is a focused 24-meeting Friday cohort that walks students through every topic on the NY State Common Core Regents Geometry exam — tools of geometry and formal constructions, rigid motions and congruence proofs, similarity and dilations, right-triangle trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, and cofunctions), the laws of sines and cosines, circles and their angle-and-segment relationships, coordinate geometry and equations of lines and circles, and area/volume/surface area of three-dimensional solids. The last three meetings are timed practice exams with in-class error analysis, so students walk into the June Regents having already sat the test three times.

Meetings run Fridays from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at our 226 W 79th Street studio, capped at 6 students per cohort. Tuition is $489 per month, rolling — cancel anytime with 15 days notice. The $99 one-time registration covers a placement diagnostic, all workbooks, printed problem sets, and printed practice exams.

Every Regents Geometry & Trigonometry class follows the same 120-minute structure so students walk in knowing what to expect and walk out with a corrected mini-quiz — and, in the final block of the term, a scored practice Regents section.

Puzzles & Enigmas

Warm-up with logic puzzles, math riddles, and short brain-teaser problems. The point is to switch the brain on without yet introducing today’s topic — students arrive at different focus levels and this 30-minute block evens the room.

Subject — concept & guided practice

First half of today’s Regents topic. One Common Core Geometry standard per meeting — mapped directly to the NY State Regents blueprint. Concept-first: the instructor demonstrates two worked Regents-style examples on the whiteboard (compass-and-straightedge constructions, transformation diagrams, or trig triangles as the topic requires), then students try guided practice with the teacher walking the table.

Subject — word problems & applications

Second half of the topic focused on Regents-style word problems and multi-step applications — the format students will see on Parts II, III, and IV of the June exam. Examples we use: modeling a savings-versus-spending scenario with a system of equations; deciding between a linear phone plan and an exponential data plan; extracting a quadratic from a projectile word problem and interpreting the vertex.

Mini-quiz — corrected in class

A short timed mini-quiz using Regents-format questions on today’s topic, then we correct it together — question by question, out loud, with the right strategy spelled out for each item. Parents get the corrected paper at the end of the session so they know exactly where their child stands relative to a Regents-passing score.

How large are SOMATH classes?

Every SOMATH class is capped at 6 students. That is the number that lets one teacher see every student's work in real time, correct silent mistakes before they become habits, and pace to the room instead of the average. Larger groups defeat the whole point of small-group teaching, so we hold the cap firmly.

Where do classes meet?

In person at 226 W 79th Street, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10024 — one block from the 79th Street 1 train and a short walk from the B and C at 81st Street. We do not offer online classes; the small-group model relies on shared whiteboard work and in-room feedback.

What is included in registration?

$99 one-time registration covers a placement test, a written diagnostic, and a personalized learning plan delivered within 48 hours. Workbooks, problem sets, and printed practice tests are included at no extra charge. The $99 registration is separate from monthly tuition.

Can we pause or cancel?

Yes. Cancel anytime with 15 days written notice — no long-term contract. Up to 4 weeks of free pause per year to cover travel or family events, and one free make-up per month for a missed class (subject to available seats in another cohort).

Does this cover the entire NY State Regents Geometry exam?

Yes. Every Common Core Regents Geometry topic area is covered end-to-end across the 24-meeting arc — tools of geometry and formal constructions; rigid motions, congruence and CPCTC; similarity, dilations, and the AA/SAS/SSS criteria; right-triangle trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, cofunctions); the laws of sines and cosines; circles, chords, tangents, arcs, and inscribed angles; coordinate geometry and equations of lines and circles; area, surface area, and volume of three-dimensional solids; and full past-exam review with three timed mocks in the final block.

Why does this include trigonometry when the exam is called Regents Geometry?

Right-triangle trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, cofunctions, and applications) and the laws of sines and cosines are core NY State Regents Geometry topics — they appear on every Part II–IV of the exam. We cover them as part of the syllabus so students walk into June already fluent in the trig portion.

How is this different from Young Fermats Geometry and Trigonometry?

Young Fermats Geometry and Trigonometry is our middle-school bridge for accelerated 7th and 8th graders — conceptual, rolling topic arc. Regents Geometry and Trigonometry is exam-focused prep for 9th and 10th graders sitting the NY State Regents exam — one Friday cohort, 24 meetings mapped directly to the Regents blueprint, with three timed practice exams built in.

When should my child start to be ready for the June Regents?

The full 24-meeting arc runs roughly 6 months at one meeting per week. For a June Regents, students who start by early January complete the sequence with 2–3 weeks of buffer before the exam. Students joining mid-arc can still sit the June Regents — we tailor the pacing and add supplementary problem sets to close any gaps identified in the placement diagnostic.

Does my child need to have finished Algebra 1 first?

Ideally yes — students should be comfortable with linear equations, systems, the coordinate plane, and basic function notation before starting Regents Geometry. The placement diagnostic will flag any gaps, and if a student needs algebra reinforcement first we’ll say so honestly and recommend Regents Algebra 1 Prep or Young Fermats Algebra Ignite as the prerequisite step.
