"He went in scoring around 40% on practice tests and by December he was consistently above 70%. The teachers know exactly where the gaps are and go after them. He got into Bronx Science. Worth every penny."
Math School · Upper West Side · Grades 1–12
School of Math is a small-group math school on the Upper West Side, founded by two educators who spent two decades preparing more than 3,000 students for admission to MIT, Harvard, and Stanford's graduate programs. We brought that same method home to New York for grades 1 through 12 — including SHSAT, AMC 8, SAT, and AP prep.

Learn more02 · Our Method
SOMATH isn't drop-in tutoring. We run 12 leveled programs, each built as a 24-class cycle that restarts every 6 months. Enroll at any point of your child's level — they'll complete all 24 classes of the cycle, carrying any remaining sessions into the next one.
Every student begins with a free 60-minute evaluation. We map gaps, strengths, and learning style before we place them into the right cohort.
Every 2-hour class follows the same rhythm: 30 minutes of math puzzles and enigmas to warm up curiosity, an hour of lecture and guided problem-solving on the day's topic, and 30 minutes for a mini-test and full solution walk-through.
Students work by hand in small cohorts — no tablets, no worksheet stacks. The focus is building real problem-solving skill and the curiosity to keep going when a problem gets hard.
We're the only math program in the neighborhood that sends parents structured feedback throughout the cycle — what your child mastered, what they're still working on, and what to practice at home.
Every SOMATH class is led by a Harvard- or Northwestern-trained teacher who has spent more than a decade preparing NYC students for SHSAT, AP Calculus, and selective college admissions — not a college student or a rotating shift worker.
Twelve leveled programs that hand off cleanly from Little Newtons in 1st grade through AP Calculus BC in 12th. Families who start with us in elementary school don’t need to switch providers for SHSAT, SAT, or AP prep — the path is already built.

We're not a chain. SOMATH is a small math school founded by two educators who've spent twenty years preparing students for MIT, Harvard, and Stanford. Classes are small, taught live by Harvard- and Northwestern-trained teachers, and built around understanding — not worksheet drills.
Grades 1 through 12 — from Little Newtons (ages 6–10) through SHSAT prep in middle school and AP / SAT prep in high school. Every student starts with a free 60-minute evaluation so we can recommend the right track.
It's 60 minutes, one-on-one with a SOMATH teacher, at our Upper West Side location or on Zoom. We assess where your child is, what gaps to close, and which track they belong in. You'll get a written summary — even if you don't enroll.
Our core programs run for 6 months in structured semesters — long enough to actually move the needle, short enough to keep the work focused.
Yes. SHSAT prep is a dedicated middle-school track (grades 7–8). For high schoolers we run AP Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB / BC, and SAT math prep. Most of our SHSAT students see 30+ point gains; many earn seats at Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, or Brooklyn Tech.
