What Is Math Enrichment? A Parent’s Guide for Grades K–8
Every year, more NYC parents ask us the same question: what actually is math enrichment, and does my child need it? The word gets used loosely — for apps, for after-school clubs, for extra worksheets, for one-on-one tutoring. This guide is what we tell those parents, in the order they usually ask.

1. What math enrichment actually means
The definition parents wish someone had given them earlier.
Math enrichment is math instruction that goes beyond what a child gets in school. Deeper reasoning. Harder problems. Better fluency. A stronger foundation than any single grade-level curriculum provides. It is the answer for parents who look at their child’s math and think: they can do more than this.
School math, for most kids in most schools, is aimed at the middle of the classroom. Word problems are usually single-step. Fluency is assumed rather than built. Concepts get introduced quickly and then move on. A child who is on grade level often stays on grade level because school is not designed to push them further — it is designed to bring the class along together.
Math enrichment is what happens when a child gets more. More teaching. More practice. Harder problems. A curriculum that assumes fluency is a real goal, not a hope. And — the part most parents underestimate — a group of peers all working at that same higher level, so the child sees that this is normal rather than exceptional.
2. What math enrichment is not
Because the category gets used loosely, it helps to name what does not count.
Math enrichment is not homework help.
Homework help is reactive — a child gets stuck on something the teacher assigned, and someone helps them finish it. Enrichment does not follow the school’s pacing. It runs on its own curriculum, on its own schedule, whether or not the child has math homework that week.
Math enrichment is not an app.
Apps like IXL, Prodigy, and Beast Academy Online can be useful for extra practice. They are not enrichment because there is no teacher in the loop. No one is watching your child think, catching the moment they use a strategy that will fail later, or asking them to explain their reasoning out loud. Software cannot teach reasoning — it can only score it.
Math enrichment is not Kumon.
Kumon is a worksheet-based system where the child works packets and an adult checks the answers. There is no live teaching. Kumon does one thing well — drilling arithmetic facts — and does everything else poorly. If your goal is arithmetic fluency and nothing else, Kumon works. If your goal is reasoning, problem-solving, and depth, it does not.
Math enrichment is not tutoring.
Tutoring is remedial. A child struggles with something specific, and a tutor helps them catch up on that specific thing. It is one-on-one, short-term, and disappears when the child is caught up. Enrichment assumes the child is fine and builds a stronger math brain for what comes next. It is a long-term investment, not a fix.
3. Enrichment vs. tutoring vs. Kumon vs. apps
The differences on one page.
Parents ask us all the time: is this tutoring? Is this like Kumon? Is this like Mathnasium? The honest answer is that these categories overlap but do different things. Here is how they compare.

The important thing to notice is that enrichment and tutoring are not competing — they solve different problems. Tutoring is a fire extinguisher. Enrichment is a smoke detector plus a sprinkler system. Some families need both at different times.
4. Six signs your child would benefit from math enrichment
The patterns we see in the families who come to us.
- 1. Your child finishes school math quickly and gets bored.They are done with the assigned work in a fraction of the class time and either goof off, help other kids, or read their book. School will not fix this. Enrichment gives them harder material and peers working at the same level.
- 2. Your child is on grade level but you notice fluency gaps.Slow arithmetic. Weak place value. Confusion with equivalent fractions. Long division that takes twice as long as it should. These are quiet gaps that widen over time — the algebra teacher will find them in three years.
- 3. Your child is strong but has never done a hard problem.They ace grade-level work but have never seen a problem that took more than one step of reasoning. When the SHSAT or SAT eventually asks for two steps, they will freeze — not because they are weak, but because they have never practiced sustained thinking.
- 4. You are targeting a selective middle school or high school.NYC selective admissions (Hunter, SHSAT, private-school entrance exams) reward students who have been doing this for years, not the ones who cram for six months. Enrichment is how families build that pipeline early.
- 5. Your child likes math and you want to feed the interest.The worst thing you can do to a mathematically-inclined kid is give them nothing harder than school. Enrichment is where they meet challenging problems, other kids who care about math, and adults who take their interest seriously.
- 6. Your child is quietly falling behind at a fast-paced school.Some private and gifted programs move faster than the average curriculum. If your child is slipping, enrichment can consolidate the gaps before it becomes a crisis at parent-teacher conferences. This is the one case where enrichment doubles as gentle remediation — done in a group setting so the child does not feel singled out.
If two or more of these describe your family, enrichment is worth exploring. If none of them do, your child is probably fine as they are — not every kid needs enrichment, and there is no shame in that.
5. When to start — and why earlier compounds better
The three natural entry points, and what happens at each.
There is no wrong age to start math enrichment, but there are a few natural windows where it works especially well.
Window 1: Grades 1–2 (ages 6–8)
The best age to start if you are planning ahead. First and second grade is when number sense, place value, and the meaning of arithmetic are laid down. A child who builds these foundations deeply has an advantage that compounds every year afterward — multiplication in 3rd grade lands faster, fractions in 4th grade land faster, algebra in 7th grade lands faster. The math is easy; the payoff is enormous.
Window 2: Grades 3–5 (ages 8–10)
The most common starting point among the families we see. This is when multi-digit multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, and multi-step word problems first appear. It is also when the gap between on-grade students and strong students starts to widen visibly. If your child is on grade level in 3rd grade and stays on grade level through 5th, that’s fine — but if you want them to move ahead, this is the window where doing so is possible without a huge lift.
Window 3: Grades 6–8 (ages 11–13)
The last comfortable window before high school. Pre-algebra and algebra are the courses that decide high-school math placement, and by extension the ceiling on what a student can take in high school. A student who enters 6th grade with weak arithmetic and no reasoning habits will spend middle school struggling. A student who enters with fluency and reasoning already built will spend middle school moving forward. Starting in middle school still works — it just requires more intensity than starting earlier.
6. What a strong math enrichment program looks like
Six markers we look for.
- A real teacher, teaching every class.Not a homework helper. Not a proctor. Not an app. Every class is taught in real time by a trained educator who runs the classroom the way a strong school teacher would.
- Small groups — six or fewer.Small enough that the teacher knows exactly where every student is in every session. Large enough that students hear other kids explain their thinking, which is often more valuable than the teacher’s explanation.
- A purposeful curriculum with a written syllabus.Not improvised weekly worksheets. Not “whatever the student brings in from school.” A real syllabus — typically 24 or 48 classes — where every session builds on the last one and is planned before the semester starts.
- Year-round, not semester-based.Math enrichment works because it compounds. Weekly practice over 12 months beats a summer intensive plus scattered fall sessions. Programs that pause for June, July, and August are optimizing for their calendar, not for your child’s learning.
- In-person if possible.Math reasoning develops better in a room with a whiteboard, real paper, and a teacher standing at the board than through a Zoom window. Online can work in a pinch. It is not the default.
- A diagnostic evaluation before enrollment.A strong program will not enroll your child until they know where your child actually is. That means an evaluation — usually 30–45 minutes — with a teacher, followed by a written report on strengths and gaps. If a program signs your child up without an evaluation, they are not diagnosing — they are selling.
7. How to choose a math enrichment program in NYC
The four questions to ask before you write a tuition check.
Question 1: Who is teaching?
Ask specifically. Not “what are your teachers’ qualifications?” — ask who will be teaching my child. If the answer is “we rotate” or “we have a team,” press for names. Small programs led by a founder-teacher (or a very short list of teachers) tend to deliver more consistent instruction than large centers with a rotating roster.
Question 2: What is the curriculum?
Ask to see the syllabus. Not a description — the actual list of 24 or 48 classes with topics. If they cannot produce one, or if the answer is “we adapt to each student,” be cautious. Adaptation is good; improvisation is not. A real program has a real plan.
Question 3: What is the group size?
“Small groups” means different things in different places. At Mathnasium it can mean 6–10. At Russian School of Math, groups can hit 12. Ask the actual maximum. Six is the number where the teacher can still know every student. Above eight, it becomes a classroom, which is what school already is.
Question 4: What happens at the first meeting?
The answer should be “an evaluation.” If it is “we’ll sign you up and start next week,” leave. A program that enrolls without diagnostics is optimizing for revenue, not for your child.

The questions we hear most often from NYC parents.
Is math enrichment worth it if my child is already good at math?
Especially if they are already good. Strong students who only do grade-level work tend to plateau — they finish assigned work quickly and rarely encounter problems that require more than one step of reasoning. Enrichment is where they meet harder problems, learn to persist through frustration, and build the reasoning habits that pay off in SHSAT, SAT, AP exams, and college math.
How much does math enrichment cost in NYC?
In NYC, weekly small-group enrichment typically costs $250–$500 per month depending on grade and program. Kumon centers charge around $180–$220 per month for worksheet-based drills. One-on-one tutoring runs $120–$300 per hour. Math apps cost $10–$25 per month but replace neither classroom teaching nor peer discussion. Does math enrichment help with SHSAT or SAT prep?
Yes — enrichment is the foundation that makes test prep work. The SHSAT and SAT reward students who are already fluent with arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. A student with strong enrichment through 7th grade will pick up SHSAT strategy in a few months. A student without that foundation spends most of their SHSAT prep filling gaps rather than practicing the exam itself. Enrichment is not a substitute for test-specific prep — it is what makes test-specific prep efficient.
How long does my child need to be in enrichment?
Most SOMATH families stay for years, not months. Enrichment is a compounding investment — the returns are largest for families who treat it as part of their child’s education, not as a short-term fix. That said, there is no lock-in. Families can pause and resume at any point; the curriculum is designed so students can rejoin their cohort without falling behind.
My child already gets extra work at school. Do they still need enrichment?
Often, yes. “Extra work” at a good school usually means more of the same — harder worksheets on the same topics the class is doing. Enrichment is a parallel curriculum, not more of the school one. It covers different problem types, different reasoning styles, and often topics the school will not touch for another year or two. A child who is doing well at school with extra work still benefits from a program that operates on its own track.
My child hates math. Will enrichment make it worse?
Handled well, it makes it better. Most kids who hate math hate it because they feel confused, slow, or dumb in class. A small-group enrichment program that starts with a diagnostic and works at the child’s actual level — not their grade level on paper — often reverses that within a few months. What kids call “hating math” is usually “hating feeling behind.” Fix the feeling, and the interest often returns.
